LABORATORY OF ANCIENT DRAMA AND THEATRE RESEARCH

HUMAN RESOURCES

The following faculty members of the Department of Theatre Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens have joined the Laboratory (by decision of the 5th General Assembly 2022-2023, 07.02.2023, and the 6th Act of the Department’s Chair):

Kaiti Diamantakou: Bachelor with Honors in Classics and in Theatre Studies, at the Faculty of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where she also accomplished her PhD in Classics in 1998, being State Scholarships Foundation grant holder. Since 2004 she belongs to the academic staff of the Department of Theatre Studies of the same Faculty, where she now holds the position of Professor. She delivers many of the compulsory undergraduate courses that fall within the academic field “Theatre of Antiquity” (the work of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, Menander, the reception of Ancient Theatre) while on postgraduate level she has taught for many years the course “Ancient Theatre and its Reception” and the course “Issues of Ancient Theatre” in the last four years.  Her scientific and research interests focus on the history and theory of ancient theatre, on the specific dramatic genres (tragedy, comedy and satyr drama) and their particular theatrical codes, on the historical and social background that generated and fed Greek theatre, on the reception of ancient drama by modern, Greek and international, dramaturgy, stage practice and other arts. Her educational and research work, her scientific communications and publications focus on those fields of interest.

Maria Georgousi belongs to the Special Teaching and Research Staff of the Department of Theatre Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She holds a PhD in Classics and is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Peloponnese. She has taught in postgraduate seminars in ethical philosophy and ancient Greek philology at the same university and has twenty-five years of experience as a philologist in secondary education. Her special research interests include ancient comedy and tragedy and ancient Greek philosophy, with an emphasis on the Sophist movement of the fifth century BC, as well as the interdisciplinary examination of classical drama with contemporary psychological theories. She has published monographs: Spoudaion-Geleion: Meanings, Functions, and the Relation of Terms to Each Other in Aristophanes’ Comedies (Ed. Papazisis, 2015); Aggression in Aristophanes’ Comedies (Ed. Kardamitsa, 2016); Inconsistencies in Aristophanes’ Comedies: A Psychological Interpretation (Ed. Kardamitsa, 2016); Aristophanes and Sophistry (Doctoral Dissertation. Ed. Papazisis, 2016); The Echo of Sophistic Perceptions in Sophocles’ Philoctetes. (Ed. Kardamitsa, 2016); Contemporary Psychotherapeutic Approaches to Aristophanes’ Comedies (Ed. Herodotus, 2022). She has published articles in the journals Skepsis, Ellinika, Plato, Philologos, Kimothoi, Parnassos, Carpe diem and in the Yearbook of the Department of Philology of the University of Peloponnese. She has collaborated with the Centre for Ancient Rhetoric and Drama (C.A.R.D.) of the Department of Humanities and Cultural Studies of the same University.

Grigoris Ioannidis: Associate Professor at the Department of Theatre Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Diploma in Electrical Engineering (National Technical University of Athens), BSc in Theatre Studies (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens). MA in History and Philosophy of Science and Mathematics (King’s College, London) and in Theatre Studies (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens). Theatre reviewer in the Editors’ Newspaper (Efimerida ton Sintakton). His main interests are Post-War Greek and European dramatology, foreign repertory of Greek Theatres, new technologies in modern stage.

Ioanna Remediaki holds an MA in Classical Literature and a BA and Ph.D. in Theatre Studies (thesis: The Translations of Sophocles’ Antigone for the Modern Greek Stage 1850-2000), as well as a degree in acting. She is a Lecturer of Greek Drama, in the Department of Theatre Studies, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Her research interests focus on interlingual translation, the political dimension of ancient Greek tragedy (issues of identity and otherness), and the connection between the theory and practice of Greek drama. Her book: Theatre CompanyMneme-Kydonia Theatre. 20 years of theatrical activity in the city of Chania explores the artistic and political function of an innovator group in a small country town. As Artistic Director of the theatre company “Group Equals One”, she has written, directed, and performed the performances: The Table, Vacuum’s Excavation, Museum Stories, Space Hamlet, Sweet Ophelia, and Sacred Way 2 in Greece, Italy, and Germany, in theatres, museums, festivals, open public spaces and self-managed collectivas, exploring issues of identity/otherness and collective/political space.
