LABORATORY OF ANCIENT DRAMA AND THEATRE RESEARCH

PLUTUS 21

Unpublished Translations of Greek Drama:

Detection – Collection – Recording – Evaluation

  • Acronym: PLUTUS 21

The aim of the Research Project is, at first, to search for, locate, record and, if possible, collect (and transcribe/digitize) copies of unpublished theatrical translations (either handwritten or mainly typed, typewritten or on a computer) (unpublished, published partially in anthologies and journals, lost and latent). These “hidden'” translations, many of which have nourished important theatrical performances and come from the pen of distinguished writers and artists, constitute an additional valuable –and still untapped in its greatest extent– archival material for the investigation of the linguistic, translational, theatrical and, more generally, cultural reception of ancient drama in modern and contemporary Greece.

At a second time, the unpublished translations will be catalogued as comprehensively as possible: Translatum’s title – Source text – Translatum’s characterisation – Translator’s identity –Location/Archive – Performance(s) – Other peritextual elements – Translatum’s characteristics (linguistic, metrical, morphological) - Modes of intervention (circumlocutions, additions, transpositions of passages etc.). The archival material that will be collected will, after its completion, be accessible to students (first, second and third cycle), young researchers, university professors, drama school teachers, artists and interested parties in general, who will be able to visit the electronic archive and obtain information on unpublished translations or study unpublished translations, with on-site meetings scheduled at the Laboratory of the Department of Theatre Studies NKUA, where the archival (printed and electronic) material will be hosted.

Scientific Supervisor: Aikaterini (Kaiti) Diamantakou, Professor of the Department of Theatre Studies, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece.

Research Associates: Alexandros Cohen (MA director, translator, student of the Department of Theatre Studies of NKUA) - Manos Damaskinos (ΜΑ theatrologist, Phd Candidate, Department of Theatre Studies of NKUA).
