In the framework of the research activities of the Department of Theatre Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the project “Database of Ancient Greek Theatre” was launched in the academic year 2004-2005, co-funded by the European Social Fund and National Resources (EPEAEK II).

SEMELI, as the Project was named by the participating research members, aimed at the systematic recording and management of information on ancient theatre, at archaeological, grammatological and bibliographical level, with a view to a global approach to ancient theatre as an architectural expression, theatre practice, literary production and cultural activity, within the boundaries of the Greek area, but also in the wider geographical territory of the Greek-speaking world in antiquity.

In accordance with the prescribed objectives, the organization and filing of the imported data and information was carried out according to a specially designed template based on three general thematic axes: a) Architectural Monuments b) Painting Monuments and c) Sculpture Monuments. The implementation of the system was based on a central database where all the data were stored, and the management application provided access to all users of the application in a web-based environment. In addition to the unstructured information, i.e. the representation of the source itself (text, slides, sources, bibliography), the input and management system also supported structured information, i.e. the description of the material using “index terms” (Type, Chronology, Location, Creator, Material, Area, Location, Dimensions, etc.).

The subsystem of combined exploration of the registered and classified material offered the possibility of multi-criteria searches, providing results in the form of lists, but also allowing the linking of different “Types”, “Species” and “Subject Categories”, based on specific "keywords" attached to each "Tab".
